I synched many a generator back in...Ahhh, memories. I synched many a generator back in my Navy days. At the power plant I worked at, we were never allowed to synch manually. Automatic synchronization did the task for us, because we were not trusted to do it ourselves. To be fair, I guess, I wouldn't have trusted half the boobs in the control room to do it right, and unlike Naval generators, large commercial units do not have shear sections on the input shaft to prevent catastrophic damage. But I always watched the synchroscope when putting a unit online, and the APD (auto paralleling device) always closed the output breaker at the exact same moment I would have, "5 minutes to 12".
