From the Wall Street Journal:
I don't want to alarm anybody, but maybe it's time for Americans to start stockpiling food.
Reality: Food prices are already rising here much faster than the returns you are likely to get from keeping your money in a bank or money-market fund. And there are very good reasons to believe prices on the shelves are about to start rising a lot faster.

We're doing a garden at the farm this summer. The pressure canner is already up there, and the S.O. has his instructions -- he will can whatever's ripe as the summer progresses. He's spending the summer at the 'ranch' while I toil away at my day job keeping the world safe from misplaced commas and hyphens.

Jackie Clay's writing about this stuff is invaluable. I have a link to her blog, in the sidebar.
